On the origin of Earth's large-scale magmatic activities

摘要:

        The Earth tectonic history witnessed numerous magmatic events whose physical scale exceeds most modern volcanic activities. Due to lack of direct constraints, the origin of these pre-historical events is debated, with a commonly invoked mechanism being deep-rooted mantle plumes. The plume model, however, remains difficult to prove or disprove. We circumvent this problem through examination of the top-down (non-plume) tectonic activities, such as oceanic plate subduction and continental lithosphere deformation, as well as plume genesis and evolution in a state-of-the-arts mantle convection model that simultaneously considers all major known geodynamic processes. Here we will provide a discussion on the plausible origin of various large-scale magmatic events ranging from large igneous provinces to super volcanoes, while shedding light on their associated geodynamic contexts.

刘丽军, 中国科学院地质与地球物理研究所研究员。2003 年本科毕业于中国科技大学,2010 年博士毕业于加州理工学院,2012-2023 年在美国伊利诺伊大学任助理教授,副教授和正教授,先后获得 AGU Jason Morgon Early Career Award,美国 NSF CARERR Award,中科院百人A, 国家级高层次人才,和腾讯探索奖。学术/社会兼职包括Journal of Geodynamics主编,Earth & Planetary Physics Acta Geologica Sinica 副主编,中国科学:地球科学编委,AGU评奖委员会成员,华人地球科学家协会主席等。主要从事定量地球动力学研究,首创用伴随数据同化方法实现地幔对流和构造过程的时间反演,开发了高精度时间正演和时间混演数据同化模型,定量实现了从地幔对流到地貌演化、从过去超大陆裂解到现今板块俯冲动力过程,从岩石圈变形到火山喷发机制等多尺度、多过程的深浅动力耦合数值模拟。近年来发表论文 110 多篇, 包括20余篇刊登在Nature Science 及其子刊。
