Mechanics and dynamics along a bimaterial interface with rheological contrast

Bimaterial interface commonly exists in natural faults and manufactured materials. Previous studies mainly focus on the effects of elastic contrast, but otherwise assume a uniform rheology along the interface. Here we explicitly consider a rheological contrast across the bimaterial interface, by juxtaposing a soft, velocity-strengthening material with a stiff, velocity-weakening material. Our experimental results show that the bimaterial fault exhibits stick-slip behavior, and is accompanied by a mechanical transition from high friction to low friction. Fault surface examination reveals that numerous small pieces of the stiff material are sheared off and adhered to the soft material. The above phenomena are reproduced by numerical simulations, which further confirm the importance of micro-scale topographic undulation of the original interface and a dynamic migration of the effective interface over the course of continuous loading. These results have important implications for understanding the subduction process, such as seamount decapitation, basal erosion and underplating.

徐世庆,南方科技大学地球与空间科学系副教授。2007年本科毕业于北京大学,2013年博士毕业于美国南加州大学,2013至2019年在日本防灾科学技术研究所工作,2019年至今在南方科技大学工作。主要研究方向为震源物理,包括地震破裂过程、断层演化、损伤力学以及岩石实验。近些年陆续观测到断层界面波(fault-interface wave)、反向传播破裂(back-propagating rupture)、高阶重复破裂(high-order re-rupture)、破裂停止相(rupture stopping phase)等现象,并对其产生机制和潜在应用进行了研究。以第一或共同作者在Nature Geoscience、Nature、Nature Communications等期刊上发表论文35篇。2017年获日本地震学会青年科学家奖,2022年获中国地球物理学会傅承义青年科技奖,2024年获日本地震学会技术开发奖。2023年至今在Geophysical Journal International担任编辑。
