Towards magma transport in active volcanoes from a seismic perspective

报告摘要:

Understanding magma ascent, storage, and discharge in the trans-crustal magmatic system is key to long-term volcanic output and short-term eruption dynamics. Existing knowledge of magma storage zone and transport dynamics is primarily inferred from geodetic (e.g., InSAR, GNSS, tiltmeter & strainmeter), seismic (e.g., tomography, ambient noise, VT seismicity), petrological (e.g., chemical diffusion-based geospeedometer), geochemical (e.g., volatile flux and composition) and numerical analysis. However, whether magma transports continuously or discretely cannot be arguably concluded from the above observations. Here, through a deep understanding of shallow conduit dynamics in Aso volcano, Japan, as an example, I will show how our fundamental understanding of magma transport in the shallow earth crust beneath active volcanoes is shifted and what such advances can implicate in the field of volcano seismology.

报告人简介:

牛杰明,博士,中国科学院地质与地球物理所特聘副研究员。2007年至2016年就读于武汉大学。2017年至2021年分别在英国伦敦大学学院和台湾中央研究院进行博士后工作。目前利用地震、大地测量和地球化学等观测资料和多相流体传播理论研究多时空尺度的岩浆动力演化过程。目前已在Nature Communications, GRL, JGR等期刊以一作身份发表论文7篇。
