    Heiner Igel is Professor of Seismology at the Department of Earth Sciences at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany. After undergraduate studies in Karlsruhe and Edinburgh, he obtained his doctoral degree in 1993 from the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris developing parallel forward and inverse modelling tools for wave propagation problems. He then moved to the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics in Cambridge UK where he developed wave simulation techniques for regional and global problems with spherical geometry. Since his arrival in Munich in 1999 his main interests are (1) using 3-D modelling tools for wave propagation and rupture problems for the estimation of shaking hazard; (2) development of wave propagation tools for unstructured grids; (3) the influence of precipitation on seismicity; (4) rupture at bimaterial interfaces; and (5) the observation and modelling rotational ground motions. He coordinated the EU funded training networks SPICE and QUEST in the field of computational seismology. He obtained an ERC-Advanced grant in 2013 (co-)developing a multicomponent ring laser system for geodesy and seismology. He wrote a first text book on Computational Seismology and offers a video course in computational methods on the COURSERA platform followed by over 27000 students. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
